Play Do You Hear What I Hear

Before we start
You should play it

You should play
Do You Hear What I Hear

Now, I'm not religious
So it's a little strange
That my favorite Christmas song
Isn't a secular one

Don't get me wrong

"Santa Baby"
Makes me very happy

But my FAVORITE?

It's "Do You Hear What I Hear"

It starts out with the night wind
Talking to a little lamb

Now what don't you love about that?

Strong imagery
A cute little lamb
And a night wind
Whispering
That something big just happened

A star is dancing in the night

Right away
It grabs you
It pulls you in

And it features my favorite thing--

GOSSIP

The lamb goes to a shepherd boy
And tells him there's a song playing
Sung by a voice as big as the sea

And don't you love the repetition
You say it once softly
Then you sing it out as loud as you can

You get the best of both worlds!

Then the shepherd goes to the king
The mighty king

Isn't that something?
That the shepherd boy
Can actually go talk to the King?

Like, who is he to go talking to the King?
But he does
Because it's just that kind of night

And he says to the King--

There's a little child shivering in the cold
Let's go bring him gifts
Let's go bring him gold
Let's go rejoice

And this is why
Even though I'm not religious
I love this song

Because I like to think
That the child
Could be any child

That somewhere there's a baby
Born to a scared mother
Who doesn't know what to do
Because she's not in some pretty hospital
And it's probably cold
And the manger probably smells (I mean, there are lambs)
And she's got a kid
And people are talking

But everybody--

EVERYBODY

The kings
The shepherd boys
The lambs

They're all saying--

Rejoice
Rejoice

Because the world just got another chance
To do something right

Because any kid
Could be the kid
To bring us all
Goodness and light

Put a gospel choir behind that
Get yourself some eggnog
Really listen to what that song is saying
And I'll tell you something--

You're going to have
A really good Christmas
