The Will in the Ball Pit

Someone left their will
In the ball pit

No idea

No idea why they had it--

And they?

Who they?

A parent, clearly?

A parent of a child
A child small enough
To go in the ball pit?

We don’t let adults
In the ball pit

We allow it
In certain situations

Like, if we’re tired
If the parents seem
Like they’d scream at us
If we asked them
To remove themselves from the--

But why would they have
Their will on them?

And not even in an envelope
We looked for an envelope
We didn’t find one

Just the will

And we carefully removed
Each ball
From the ball pit
To see if there were any clues
As to who the will belonged to
Because the ink on it
Was smudged
In all the right places

Right meaning
The places where the person’s name
Could be found

But we know their wishes
Their last wishes
And how they’d like
Their estate divvied up

And yes, yes
They have an estate
A sizable estate
And that begs the question--

What were they doing
In a BALL PIT?

And why was their will
Tucked hastily
In a back pocket
Or front pocket
Or jacket pocket?

Or were they just holding it?

Did they let it go on purpose?
Did they want to lose it?
Did they want us to find it?

Why us?

Do they need help?

And what kind of help?

We all tried to remember
Who was there
The night we found the will
But nothing out of the ordinary
Jumped out at us

Two birthday parties
A group of mom’s
A single dad who never looked up from his phone
The whole time he was--

Could it be his?

No, he wouldn’t have gone in the ball pit

Adults who go in the ball pit
Have a certain...look
About them

There’s no easy answer
For what to do
With the will

We found a manila folder for it
And put it in the lost and found
But after an hour or so
We admitted to ourselves
That we couldn’t accept
Keeping it there
Next to baseball caps
And sippy cups
So we moved it
To the cash drawer
Which seemed to acknowledge
The importance
Of the document

There it sits
Waiting for its owner

But what if something happens to them
Before they come back?

Do they realize they’ve lost
Their last testament?

The ball pit has to be refilled
But nobody feels like doing it

It would be like moving on
Moving on without an answer

And how can anyone
Move on

Without that?
