The Fairy Godmother’s Very First Pumpkin

The fairy godmother’s

Very first pumpkin

Became a wagon

‘A wagon!’ she cried,

‘What on earth
Am I going to do

With a wagon?

I can’t go pushing around

Potential princesses

In a wagon

I have things to do!’

She tried again

And this time

The pumpkin became

A bicycle

With a basket

On the handle

‘This won’t do either,’ she whined,

‘What if she doesn’t know

How to ride a bike?

After all

They haven’t even

Been invented yet!’

Her wand went up

And down
And all around

And next thing you know

The pumpkin

Was a cat

And while fairy godmothers

Love cats

A pumpkin has no business

Being a cat

When a princess needs

To get to a ball

So away went the wand

And a spell was uttered

And the cat that was a pumpkin

Became a billboard

And the billboard was advertising

A ball

But it would certainly

Not get anyone

To a ball

The fairy godmother was very down

On herself

And what seemed to be

Her inability

To change a pumpkin

Into a carriage

She went to the field

Where the godmothers go

The fairy ones

And the ones for trolls

And the ones the witches have

And the kings

And the frogs

And the frogs who used to be kings

When the others saw

How sad she was

They gathered ‘round

And asked her

To do a spell for them

She told them she couldn’t

Because all her spells

Turned into cats

And marketing

But they asked her to try

One more time

So she aimed her wand

At a nearby carrot

Newly sprouted

From the ground

And as she whispered

The wandering spell

That sometimes wandered away

The others gathered behind her

And lifted their wands

And whispered their own

Wandering spells

And soon enough

The carrot was a carriage

With a pretty purple top

And two coachmen

Who were formerly rabbits

Standing innocently nearby

The godmother had no idea

That her friends had been behind her

Helping her

Because she liked to cast spells

With her eyes firmly shut

And so she believed

The carrot had changed

All because of her

And from that day on

She never doubted her ability

To transform and transfix

And while it is important

To let people learn

How to do things on their own

Sometimes all that’s missing

Is the confidence

That a pumpkin can become a cat

If you really want it to be that

Although you probably want a carriage

And that’s all right too

It wasn’t the last time

The fairy godmother

Would aim her wand

And wind up with something

She wasn’t quite expecting

But then she just assumed

There was a chip in the wood of the wand

Or she missed a word here or there

She doubted the way she did things
But not herself

And that’s what made

The magic

And the pumpkins

And the godmother

Show that they could do anything

They wanted to
