We Don't Know What We're Doing

We're a step back, forward, back
And we don't know how to dance
And we don't know what to say
And we're terrified
And we're excited
And we're eager
And we're hoping we never have to start

We don't even hear the music
When it stops

And we go back to a room
Where the bed is plump
And looks too nice to unmake

So at first we just lay on it
Kissing, and kissing, and kissing
And wondering when to stop kissing
And start doing something else

We've heard that you can kiss
And do other things
At the same time
But that seems nearly impossible

All the things we have to keep in our heads

Being attractive
Being sensitive
Being passionate
Being enthusiastic
Being confident

We're aware that our friends
Are downstairs drunk
Unaware that we've moved upstairs

They're expecting that we'd be waiting to do this
Until the end of the summer
But by then we may realize
That it's silly to do something so epic
And then move across the country from each other

What if we become obsessed
And need it constantly from each other?

At least this way we'll be able
To get a good month in
Between now and the two moves

We're moving now
Against each other
Around each other
Allowing each other

Begging each other
To do more
To go faster
To slow down
To take it easy

That feels nice--do that again
Do something new--okay, stop, not that
Is this okay--does that feel all right?

Why aren't you making any noise?
Am I making too much noise?
Can anyone hear us?

We're taking off clothing
We're trying not to rip anything
We're having trouble with our shoes
Should we leave our socks on?
Socks off, socks off

We're caught up in the comforter
We've lost two pillows
We're going strong now
We're thinking we should shut the window
But neither of us wants to break the rhythm we've got going

We're trying to make it romantic
We're trying to be a little bit dirty
We're dying to get to the good stuff
We'd die if it ended too soon

And before we know it
We reached the end

Want to know about the middle?

Yeah, we do too
We're not sure we were there

We're not entirely sure it happened

Was that it?

Was that...

That might not be...

Right?

Are we right?

Funnily enough
It's only afterwards
That we think

We don't know what we're doing
We really don't know
At all
