A Broken Microwave

What am I supposed to do

About this microwave?

The microwave is broken

It does not appear

To be beyond repair

But it is, in fact,

Broken

Do you know

That there are no

Repairmen

Anymore?

If an appliance breaks

You can contact the place

That sold it to you

But in the event

That place is hard to access

Because there is,

Oh, I don’t know

A pandemic going on

Then the problem becomes

Fixing the microwave

Through some sort of

Independent contractor

Because nobody feels safe

Coming to your house

Which is fine

It’s understandable

But when people say to you--

Well, I can’t come

Fix your microwave

Because there’s a pandemic

You may think to yourself

But there’s going to be

A pandemic

For…a long time

So what does that mean?

Buy a new microwave?

You can’t be wasting money

On new microwaves

People are losing their jobs

You may lose your job

If you lose your job

You’ll be furious

If you spent money

Buying a new microwave

When the one you have

Is probably able

To be fixed

Besides, if someone has time

To package and ship you

A new microwave

Doesn’t it stand to reason

That someone must have a way

Of coming into your home safely

To fix the microwave?

You don’t need to be there

When they fix the microwave

Forget six feet

You’ll go out in the yard

You’ll walk two miles

In any direction

To help them feel safe

While they fix

Your microwave

You trust them

You trust people

You have nothing worth stealing

Anyway

But nobody will come

Fix your microwave

Then you think--

What if something else breaks?

Are we just not fixing things anymore?

You understand the need

For safety

But you also understand

That broken things

Need to be fixed

When they break

Maybe a microwave

Isn’t a necessity

But even if it was

It doesn’t seem like that change

Anyone’s mind

About fixing it

What if the pipes break?
What if the shower stops working?
What if the electricity goes out everywhere?

How do we not have a plan

For these kinds of things?

How do we balance

Keeping people healthy

With not letting the entire world

Fall into a state of disrepair?

And is it okay to say

That I’m hanging on by a thread

And a broken microwave

May be just the thing

That snips that thread?

I just want a working microwave

Is that bad?

Will somebody tell me

If I’m being unreasonable

Is it wrong

To see a broken thing

And want

To get it

Fixed?
