When I want a date
An actual date
I call him
The first guy on the list
He's the dinner-and-a-movie guy
The guy I watch my grammar with
The guy I stay reserved for
Who I'm polite for
Who I don't swear around
Then there's the Mormon guy
Who was from Denver
But whose number I keep in my phone
Because he was so cute
I can't bear to think
That I probably won't see him again
And I should just delete his number
There's the guy I find attractive
But nothing's going to happen
Because he lives in St. Mike's
And I'm not driving to St. Mike's
And he's not driving here
So we're at an impasse
But I like knowing that we both
Find each other
Attractive
There's the Latin guy
Who calls me beautiful
And seems to be composing poetry
Bad poetry
Every time we hook up
There's the adorable Jewish guy
Who moved to Brooklyn
Which makes sense
Because, and if you saw him you'd agree
He was very, very Brooklyn
There's the guy who I see in my phone
And think--Oh I liked him! I should ask him out!
And then he has a boyfriend
It's always a new boyfriend
But nevertheless, a boy friend
That he's always incredibly dedicated to
And so I have him in my phone as 'Bad Timing'
There's the married guy--
Well, there are a few married guys actually
If you want to know the truth
And I'm not counting guys with significant others
Because I'm sure at least a few of these guys have those
I just close my eyes to the whole thing
These are just names in a phone
I can't delve into every possibility
When it comes to what they might have
Or who they might be
Most of the time I don't need them
For longer than a night
Awful as that may sound
I don't want a lifelong companion
I just want some company
What's wrong with wanting company?
These are the boys I call
When I want company
And these are the boys I'll stop calling
When I start looking for more
Until then, the numbers and the nicknames
Stay in the phone
Although, admittedly
It would be nice
To be able to hit one number
And talk to that one guy
And have him come over
And that's that
You know?
That would really
Be nice
