When God became an atheist
The churches grew taller
And stronger
And cut into the sky
A hole so deep
God felt God felt tumbling down
Into an experience
Of pure nature
God tasted berries
And they were sweeter
God swam in the ocean
And it was deeper
God danced with someone
And it turned out to be Joy
And Joy filled God
And believe it or not
That had never happened before
When God became an atheist
God lower-cased the 'g'
Because it was important to be among
The things on earth
Not above them
No longer looking down on them
Saying there's a plan
And yet there's mystery
There's fate
And yet there's faith
There's free will
There's choice
God gave up whatever plan there might have been
And told people to go
Just go and see what happens
God felt like what parents must feel like
The first time they let their child
Go into the water
Alone
But god trusts the water
And god trusts the child
And god knows that one day
The child will have to make due
Without god
Because god will be dead
And rather than see that as a downgrade
That, like humans, god will one day cease to be
God finds it beautiful
That god will be part of life's cycle
Just like all things
And ideas
And stories
Everything
Beautiful and profane
Must end
God sits outside a church
On a bench
At a bus stop
And thinks--
What now?
What's next?
Where do I go from here?
