Madness Adrift

Remember Alice falling down the Rabbit Hole

This is you now

But instead of things falling down
They're going by

You see popcorn
You see parakeets
You play games
With what you see

Saying 'I Spy'
To nobody

Your memories are three feet deep
But your regrets are skating along the top
Like lily pads

You are madness adrift

With twelve kinds of maybe
Meandering around your boat

Answering questions
Out of order
And without equality

Destroying your gravity
By popping holes in the boat
Swallowing your chewing gum
Splitting your oars
Screaming into the water
To see if you can hear
An echo

You are drowning
On the surface

And people look at you
And see you floating
And assume you're fine

They spend their time
Worrying
About the people in the water

Not noticing the person in the boat
Going around and around
While the others get fished out
Or sink
Or swim
Or move on

You float

You float, don't you?

You float

But one can float forever
Feeling fearless and fine
While the water dries up
And the sand appears
And one day you're not in a boat
On the ocean

Which is sort of romantic
And poetic
And so, all right

One day you're sitting
On a bunch of lumber
Elaborate cardboard
A bunch of sawdust and glue
And a wonderful past

Too bad when you look at something
You can't see its past

You can't see what it was
When it was drifting
Waiting
Ready for something bigger

Waiting for something good
To come along
