The Little Good Mouse

Once upon a time…

A queen and king

Were living happily

In their kingdom

But an envious nearby king

Heard of their affection

For each other

And sent his army

To attack their castle

The king fought valiantly in battle

But he was defeated

And the evil king

Captured the queen

The queen was with child

And the evil king

Planned to marry the child

If it was a girl

To his son

He asked his Court Predictor

If this was a good idea

And the Court Predictor predicted

That it was a very good idea

Because the child

Was going to be

A beautiful and intelligent daughter

Until the child was born

The evil king planned

To keep the queen

In a tower

Away from everyone

But one night

A small mouse

Snuck into the cell

Where the queen was imprisoned

And began to dance

And sing

Charming the sad monarch

The queen was only given

Three peas a day

For food

But being a generous woman

She gave the mouse

One of her peas

The mouse was so touched

By the queen’s kindness

That he decided to help her

Rescue her child

He found straw

Throughout the tower

And brought it to the queen

They planned

To put together a basket

So that when the baby was born

The queen could put it in the basket

And lower it down

Using the sheets from her measly bed

And the mouse would wait

At the bottom of the tower

And fetch a local villager

To adopt the baby

When the child was born

The queen did indeed lower it

But when she looked down

She saw that the mouse

Had been transformed

Into a beautiful fairy

Who had disguised herself

As a mouse

To see if the queen

Was as kind as she had heard

‘You have shown me

Tenderness, your highness

And so you shall raise your daughter

Yourself’

The fairy then waved her wand

And shrunk the tower

So that the queen

Could hop out the window

Onto the ground

And take her baby

In her arms once more

Meanwhile, in the castle

The fairy’s darker side

Went to work

The king and his associates

Soon found fur

Growing all over their body

Their noses protruded

And their bodies went in

On themselves

Tails sprung out of their backs

And their hands and feet

Turned to paws

By the time morning arrived

The castle was filled

With rats

And the villagers

Stormed the castle

To chase the disgusting creatures

Into the nearby forest

Where they were surely eaten
By wolves

And bears

This allowed the queen

To move back into the castle

With her daughter

Who would grow up

To be a wonderful queen

In her own right

And from that day forward

Everyone in the kingdom

Would keep a mouse

As a pet

And treat them very well

For you never know

What little creature

Might lend

A big hand
