I Have My Health

They’re all going to die alone

And unhappy

And there’s nothing

That can be done about that

I was sitting in my deathbed

Before I recovered

Thinking about how

My third cousin died

Alone

Because he wouldn’t speak

With anybody in the family

After we refused

To acknowledge

That he wanted to be thought of

As Batman

That wasn’t a name change

Or an identity crisis

He wanted to be looked at

And thought of

As a maniacal millionaire

Who fights crime

As a side hobby

We wouldn’t do that

And so he exiled himself

Away from us

And he died alone

And unhappy

Same thing with his father

Who chose to live alone

And die alone

And live unhappy

And die unhappy

Because nobody liked his wife

Including him

But how dare the rest of us

Feel that way

About the woman

He was unhappily married to

We accepted her

Or we were gone

And so we were gone

And a year or two

After we were gone

He and his wife separated

And both died alone

And unhappy

Everyone in the family

Dies alone

Or unhappy

And the only solace there is

In thinking about that

Is knowing

That very few people

Die with a smile on their face

Unless they die like Great-Aunt Cecile

Who died in the throes of passion

But even she was apart from all of us

At the time

Because we wouldn’t consent

To her treating her sex-butler

As some kind of husband

But I suppose she died happy

And not alone

Which is more than you can say

For most of the people

On the ever-spinning death orb

We call a planet

Most of us are going to be alone

Because your last moment

Is spent with your eyes closed

And your mind feeble

And your hearing diminished

So I’m sure you feel quite isolated

Regardless of how many people

Are around you

When you go

When I nearly went

My eyes were open

And my mind was sharp

And my hearing was better than ever

Because someone finally thought

To clean out my ears

And so I sat up in my hospital bed

And thought--

I CAN’T DIE LIKE THIS

I’M NOT EVEN ALONE
AND I DON’T EVEN FEEL UNHAPPY

I didn’t want to die

With a little bit of happiness

Left in me

And aware

That I still have people

Who want to stand alongside me

As I approach oblivion

Somehow in knowing

That death could be unhappy

I neglected to realize

That there is something

Beyond unhappy

And that even as your life

Is about to finish up

It’s still possible

For it to get

So much worse

That was when I recovered

And I’ve felt great ever since

But I know eventually

I’ll wind up

Just like my grandparents

And my parents

And my siblings

And their in-laws

And my neighbors

And everyone else

Who tries and fails

To forget

That life moves unsparingly

Towards despair

Until then, I have my health

For whatever

That’s worth

Door #2

I can’t help that

Given the chance

I would want

To see what’s behind

Door #2

That’s built into

The human condition

I have my person

I love my person

My person is great

But we have been taught

As a society

That love and sex

Are the same

And that they are linked in a way

That cannot be separated

And while some of us have evolved

Some of us have just said--

You know what?

I can handle love

And I can handle sex

And I can handle

Keeping the two of them

Far, far apart

The thing about sex

Is that it’s like being on

A 1950’s game show

I know the toaster oven is cute

I could use it

I could use a nice toaster oven

But you’ve got me looking

At Door #2

Asking if I want something

Just because it’s not

The thing

I can have

And people go for it

Time and again

They go for it

And then you have other people going--

Why aren’t they just happy

With the toaster oven?

Because, Ma’am

We have all seen the episode

Of the game show

Where the person

Kept the toaster oven

And behind Door #2

Was the car

Now, if they really wanted us

As people

To be happy

With what they have

They would have ALWAYS
Put a can of mayonnaise

Behind that door

But they didn’t

They put fun stuff

And they made people feel bad

About their toaster oven

Now, the toaster oven

Wasn’t any less effective

At making toast

Just because it wasn’t a car

But it just wasn’t anything more

Than a toaster oven

I remember one woman

Asking if she could see

What was behind the door

Before she chose

Like, as a joke

And everybody laughed

But then she goes--

Well it might be something

That you all think is better

Than the toaster oven

But I already have a car

And I thought that was so smart

Because she was just curious

And she might have chosen

Door #2 out of curiosity

Not because she wanted

To lose the toaster oven

So, you see, it’s not even

That all of us out here

Are looking to screw up

Our lives

Some of us are just curious!

I’m curious

I want to know

What my options are

And we have this way of living

That we’ve created

Where we want you

To put all your eggs

In one basket

And be happy

With that sad little basket

Why?

That’s why I’m always saying--

I’m going to pass

On whatever you offer me

For whatever might be

On the other side

Of that door

Not because

I always think

It’s going to be better

I know that

Most of the time

It’s going to be worse

But we’re all fighting

Not just to know

What our choices are

But to have a choice

Even when we don’t

Sometimes the best you can do

Is knowing

What you could have had

Sometimes

Choosing to lose

Is fine

Because at least

It’s still

A choice

The Snails Discuss Hooking Up

(AMELIA and ABBY are having lunch.)

AMELIA:  He thought...I was coming...out of my...shell.

ABBY:  For him?

AMELIA:  I...told him to...come by, but I didn't say anything about...coming out...of my...shell.

ABBY:  He just...shows up and thinks you're...going to--

AMELIA:  Yes!

ABBY:  Un...believable.

AMELIA:  Not only that--I didn't tell you...this part.

ABBY:  Don't even...tell me.

AMELIA:  I'm going to...tell you.

ABBY:  Do...not...tell me...he--

AMELIA:  He showed up...NOT WEARING HIS SHELL.

ABBY:  Disgusting.

AMELIA:  I thought...a worm...died...on my front door.  Turns out, it's just..Alonzo...with no shell on!

ABBY:  I wouldn't...have even...opened...the...door.

AMELIA:  Well, I didn't...know...what...to do.

ABBY:  I would have called...my mother.

AMELIA:  I thought...about it.

ABBY:  Why...didn't you?

AMELIA:  Well...remember...at this point...I'm...a male.

ABBY:  Oh...You were...a male...snail...at that point?

AMELIA:  Yes!  I've only been...a female...again...for a few...weeks.

ABBY:  How...long were you...a male when this...happened?

AMELIA:  I think it had been about...two...days.

ABBY:  So it was very...new...for you.

AMELIA:  Yes, and so...I opened...the door--

ABBY:  Okay.

AMELIA:  And I say...'Alonzo, I'm a...male...snail...now.  This isn't going...to work.  We can't...mate.'

ABBY:  So...what does he do?

AMELIA:  He says...'Just...hook up...with the...female...parts...of me...then.'

ABBY:  Because he's...both.

AMELIA:  Well...we're all both.

ABBY:  No...I know.

AMELIA:  But...at that point, I wasn't interested in the...female...parts of him.

ABBY:  Right.

AMELIA:  Or the male parts.

ABBY:  Got it.

AMELIA:  I mean, he showed up WITH NO SHELL ON.

ABBY:  Gross.

AMELIA:  I said 'Alonzo, go home.'

ABBY:  Go put on your shell.

AMELIA:  Well, if he puts on his shell, he will be home.

ABBY:  Right.  Sorry.

AMELIA:  He starts to cry.

ABBY:  Oh boy.

AMELIA:  Nobody's laid eggs with him yet.

ABBY:  That's not your problem.

AMELIA:  I know, but something about seeing him cry triggers the male parts of me.

ABBY:  Why?

AMELIA:  I don't know.  My male parts are very attracted to vulnerability.

ABBY:  See, my male parts are only attracted to being told how stupid I am.

AMELIA:  That's my female parts.

ABBY:  You need to work on that, Amelia.

AMELIA:  I know, but my therapist wants to charge me double if I try to work on both my parts in one session.

ABBY:  What a crook.

AMELIA:  I tell Alonzo to come inside, and next thing you know, I've got my shell off.

ABBY:  But did you want to take your shell off?

AMELIA:  Truthfully, my female parts weren't that into it, but once my male parts saw Alonzo's female parts, I was all in.

ABBY:  Does Alonzo have nice female parts?

AMELIA:  Are we objectifying right now?

ABBY:  The female parts of us aren't.

AMELIA:  Well, as a snail with male parts, I'll say that I really enjoyed his female parts and I'll leave it at that, because I'm a gentleman.

ABBY:  All right.

AMELIA:  So...it happened.

ABBY:  Did he end up--

AMELIA:  Ninety-two eggs.

ABBY:  My god.

AMELIA:  Alonzo's not much of a man, but he's quite a woman.

ABBY:  Congratulations.

AMELIA:  Thank you.  I just wanted to have him over and show him my new shell patterns.

ABBY:  Then off go the shells.

AMELIA:  Off go the shells.  Remind me not to think with my male parts during mating season.

ABBY:  Hopefully you'll be a woman again by the time the next mating season comes around.

AMELIA:  If I am, I'm staying behind the watering can.  No way am I laying any eggs.

ABBY:  I get it.

AMELIA:  No thank you.

ABBY:  I just want to have a nice time with someone, you know?

AMELIA:  Mhmm.

ABBY:  I mean, is it so wrong to want to take it slow?

The Union Forever

You’ll never find my sled

I hid it on the roof

They’ll think you took a risk

But you took the arsenic

Before you checked

Out the proof

I had a roger that

On my head

Bullseye

Ready to go

Bought the farm
Bought the breaks

Bought the name

Of my favorite game, I--

I got you tested

And, you?

Boy, you failed

This won’t be forever

This can’t be true love

This is just my favorite sled

And your name is Rosebud

I got my pact

Got my promises

My empty bag

My happenstance

You just think it’s poetry

Because

It sounds so much like me

But what do you love

Enough to give up?

What do you love

Enough to fake up

About the break-up

About what you said

When I was half-dead

In your sister’s bathroom?

This is not the vow I took

This is not the neck I choke

I--like to pray

But--not every day

I got my fence

All painted

And Huck ain’t even here

You keep on

Quoting movies

And there’s nobody there

The bat can’t fly

And the bird can’t sing

I got bracelets on wrists

And everything

The union is divided

The union doesn’t work

I found you in bed

With some undergrad jerk

Back in Alabama

That would never have flown

But you get fucked up

Ten years

Before you get grown

I managed--

Two times

To survive

Your affection

And you

Left me

With nothing

But projection

I’m a--

Sad sap

But my projector

Won’t cut it

And when the

Record player stops

You won’t remember

To shut it

Barbecue times

And kindergarten rhymes

And scratched out dimes

And and and and and--

The union is snow

And the union’s black and white

I won’t repeat the lines

But I know

They’re not right

And when you

Leave the movie going

All through the night

I’ll leave you Orson Welles

If he makes you

Feel alright

You’re not a sled

And I’m not a man

You’ll never be Rosebud

You’ll never be Rosebud

You’ll never be Rosebud

The secret is

There isn’t one

The union isn’t dead

It was never even here

Just a busted up headboard

On a queen-sized

Bed
