California Lights

She got herself arrested
By a dollar store

Tried paying more
Than what all the shit was worth

And she can't go home
'Cause they said she'd be back in a heartbeat
Can't believe it broke this fast
With the price tag still on

Looks like a dream
'Til you put the magnifying glass
Up close to it

And she knows the game

Take the plane to the farthest part away
Send letters back saying you're doing okay

Hide behind those California lights
Hide behind the tourist sights
Hide behind the paparazzi fights
And see if you're right

Head up against a glass
While the trees go by

Beaches far as the eye can see
And nobody to see them with

Some New England boy
Back home with a new girl

Probably gonna have a baby
While you're still waiting tables
At the Mexican place
Where they make you wear a sombrero

It'd be funny if you could laugh
Yeah, it'd be a riot if you could still laugh

Lucky for you there's lights
California lights, sometimes darker in the nightime
Better off being here than there
Who'd want to kiss you
If they really cared

Borrow other people's presents
So you have something to unwrap

Guess at what's inside
Even though it's crap

Looks like the goldfish didn't make it
To the next hop

Could have hoped for something better
Or you could have stopped

But you wanted to see
Those California lights

Didn't you?
Didn't you now?

So how do they look?

How do they look
To you now?
