Why The Fly Bothers The Cow

There was a Queen

Who loved animals

So much

She would put on

A large feast

For all domestic animals

In her kingdom

But the wild animals

Were not invited

Because she was scared

Of their wildness

At one of the feasts

She had her assistants

Put together three large tables

And she had a cow

Sit at the head of the table

Because he was the largest animal

At the feast

She told the cow

That while it was an honor

To sit at the head of the table

It was also a responsibility

And it was his job

To make sure

All the other animals

Sitting at the table

Received their share of food as well

The cow was very excited

To be given this task

By the Queen

And he took it quite seriously

When the first course was served

He made sure

That every animal at the table

Was given a share

But he forgot all about the fly

Because of its small size

When the fly

Went buzzing

Around the cow

To whisper to him

That he had forgotten

To send food

All the way down the table

The cow scold him

And told him

To go back to his seat

And be quiet

‘You must be patient,’

The cow said

The second course arrived

And once again

The cow did not send food

Down to the fly

When the fly went buzzing

Around the cow’s head again

The cow told the fly

To go sit down

And that eventually

She would get her food

‘Look at my eye,’

The cow said

‘Do you see that I am

Good to my word?’

But as the dinner went on

And the night grew long

No food was sent

To the fly

And it went to bed

Without eating anything at all

The next day

The Queen asked the fly

If she had enjoyed

The feast

And the fly told the Queen

That she sadly hadn’t eaten

Because no food

Had made its way to her

The Queen was furious

To hear about this

Knowing how well

All the other animals

Had eaten

She summoned the cow

And told him

That since it was his job

To make sure that everyone

At the table had their share

Regardless of size

The cow would forever

Find flies

Feasting at its eye

‘You pointed to your eye

And gave your word,’

Said the Queen

Using her powers

To set things right

Now you will always see

Flies buzzing around

The eyes of cows

As a reminder

To always keep your word

Honor your commitments

And never forget

About those

At the other end

Of the table

The cow never sat

At the head of a table again

But from that day on

The fly was never

Taken for granted

And so whenever you hear

Or see a fly buzzing around

You certainly notice it, don’t you?
