To Cross a Pig

To cross a pig
One must first
Decide
That the relationship
With the pig
Has become
Untenable

The pig has done its own crossing
It has crossed several lines
It has done unthinkable things
Things that cannot be
Undone

Decide quietly
Silently
Don’t let the pig know
That things between you
Have changed
But if you wish to keep dignity
Within your circumstances
You don’t have to fake it either

You can simply
Let a chill be felt
A calm
That, perhaps
Wasn’t there before

Friendship isn’t usually calm
It’s raucous
And you may find some satisfaction
In how still the water is
Now that you’ve cut ties
With the pig

To cross it
You should make your plans
And yes, there are plans to make
Calls to call
Visits to attend to

Let those around you
Know
That something is coming
And that while they cannot prevent it
They can
Get out of its way

But should they alert the pig to it
Action will be taken
Against them as well

The pig can have no friends
No allies
Nobody on its side

It has to be completely alone
When the strikes
Comes down
Or else it may run
And if pigs are adept at anything
It’s running

Oh yes, they may be plump
But when they see danger
They
Can
Run

Wait for just the right time
A big moment
A time of action
Distraction
When so much is going on
You’ll be the last thing
On the mind
Of a pig

Enjoy the seconds
Before you pull the rug
Out from under
Its little hoofs

Right before you do it
There will be an effort made
By the Universe
To try and change your mind

A gust will blow
In an unusual direction

A twig will crack
A car will backfire
A lamb will bleat

You’ll think about surrendering
To the intensity
Of the occasion

You’ll think about diving
Into the nightlight
Instead of the darkness

You’ll think about
Not crossing
A pig

But give it a yawn
The intensity will dissipate
The fraught will fall away
And you’ll know
It’s time

You’ll cross
The pig

There will be a sizzle
A slab
A temperature drop
That will be felt
All over
The farm

And from that point on
Nothing
Will ever
Be boring

Again
