When We Drink, We Like Each Other Better

When we drink
We like each other better

When we drink
We let out our tongues
To play

We pray to each other
We profess love
And lies
And the lies stick
To the truth
Until it's difficult
To pull them apart

We start at the beginning
And we start trimming down
All the unnecessary things
We've built up while sober

Trust
Sacrifice
Promises

We get into fights
About which one of us
Was last right
About a topic
Or an issue
We stopped caring about
Two fights ago

When we drink
We can't tell
Which of us is the bigger failure
Or which of us is better looking
Or which of us is smarter
Or which of us should be more concerned
About the other

When we drink
We tell each other
Things that should hurt
To see if they will

And at first they did
And then they stopped
And we took it as a sign of maturity
Instead of the red flag
That it probably was

When we drink
We forget
We remember
To forget
To forgive
To atone
To annihilate
To bring up
To let down
To destroy
To decimate
To alleviate
To be honest
To be ourselves
To be other people
To be the people we started being
Before we interrupted each other

That's what we are
Aren't we?

Interruptions

And not in a romantic
Poetic
Bullshit
Sort of way

When we drink
We instinctively wind up
Believing this is what
We intended to be

Drunk
Merry
Alive
Here
Transitioning
With each other
With no clue
With no path
With no plan

This is acceptable, right?

When we drink
It's a good night
Because we usually
Don't recall it
Later on

And right before
Our memory's gone
We like each other

We like each other just fine
