You Can Hear It Any Way You Want

I know he’s from France
But it sounds fake

He sounds fake

And I have to be honest
About how I think he sounds

He sounds like
He’s doing
A bad French accent

And I can’t dismiss
How I perceive it
To sound

Listen, what comes together
In my mind
Is an unfiltered honest perception
Of something
And you can’t ask me
To take that—

That thing
That has value
Because of its purity

And strip it down
By applying all this
Other information to it

I’m not saying
He wasn’t good in the movie
I’m saying he sounded—

The way he sounded
Was distracting to me

Now, I don’t know what
The solution to that is
But I’m not going to say
It wasn’t distracting
Because it was
To me

I was distracted

And I’m allowed to be distracted

And if I’m distracted
Then I need to speak up
On behalf of other people
Who might also
Be distracted

I need to advocate for them
That’s my job

It’s not my job
To come up with answers
For how to make something
Less distracting

That’s the filmmaker’s job

Do you see what I’m getting at here?

Maybe make the character
I don’t know
Not French?

I don’t see why the character
Needs to be French
Just because he lives in Paris
And it’s a French movie
And his name is Henri
Which is really just Henry
Without the ‘H’

Why not say the ‘H?’

I found it very distracting
That they didn’t pronounce the ‘H’

I just have to be honest about that

If you’re going to put an ‘H’
In front of a name
You may as well say the ‘H’ otherwise—

I know that’s how it’s—

But I’m allowed to say
That I don’t think
It makes sense

So if the French language
Doesn’t make sense to me
I’m allowed to say that
I can say that
Please don’t tell me
Not to say things
Just because they don’t make sense
Because I’m not in charge of sense or nonsense

I’m in charge of looking at something
And saying—

This is what I think

And that’s what I did

And I thought he sounded fake
And I said that
And now you’re telling me
That I was wrong
But you’re not in charge of right and wrong
And neither am I
Nobody is
And that means—

Well that means
That basically
Everything is anarchy, but you know what?

So be it

Because we can’t go around policing
What people say about things
Can we?

Unless it’s slander
Or libel
Or plagiarism

But other than that
We just need to let people
Say what they want
And not jump all over them
When they’re, uh, not exactly—

Accurate

Because it’s all about
How you see it

And you might see it
Totally different
From the way I see it
And that’s okay

You can see it
And hear it
Any way
You want
