When we will do all the things
We failed to do in the fall
Talk to the girl who sat next to us in Bio
Trick ourselves into studying more
Try to eat healthier and lose that Freshman fifteen
That's made its way into Junior year
We'll convince ourselves that we're not gay
Or that our boyfriend isn't gay
Or that the boy in Dance we have a crush on
Isn't gay just because he seems to like doing somersaults an awful lot
We'll forget about the boy we're going to meet over break
And then tell ourselves we can make it work
Through Skype dates and, perhaps, written letters
Like in the Victorian Age, or whatever
Partly knowing that instead
We'll just go back to hooking up
With that idiotic Sophomore two floors down
Because ultimately convenience trumps true love
We'll head to various places
Like New York and Miami
Boston and Los Angeles
The Midwest and Hawaii and Japan
And Home, that place we left to come here
And we'll touch base with everyone
But only lightly touch
Because we know we'll be leaving again eventually
And who knows when we'll be back again?
We'll read books, not textbooks
We'll watch mindless television
We'll go to movies alone
Because after months of noise
We value silence
Above all else
We will, against our better judgement
Start thinking about next semester
Mere seconds after we stopped thinking about this one
We will careen towards new classes
New obstacles, new things to weigh down our minds
We think about which class we'll like going to the least
We try to remain optimistic about nailing it
Nailing the whole thing--
Straight A's, Dean's List, a successful relationship
A date on Valentine's Day
And the 'G' word--
Graduation
Whereas Fall is simply a beginning
Spring is both a beginning
And an ending
And it will go by
If there's one thing we know
It's that it goes by
That chance
That precious opportunity
To savor youth
To make mistakes
To get it right
It just goes by
Too fast
