Why Your Dad Left

Your Dad left because there were parts of him
That he couldn't understand
And they built themselves up
Into the tallest thing they could be
And your Dad wasn't tall enough
To stand up to them

He left because he was walking around mirrors
And some of them showed him himself
And some of them showed him his weaknesses
And some of them showed him you
But not enough of them
Showed him you
And so he forgot
He forgot to be a man
And he turned into
The reflections
Of other people

He left because he broke too many things
And he never brought home glue

He became everything
I didn't want you to be

And even though I loved him
Like he was a movie star
I couldn't let him stay

And maybe it's my fault
Because your love shouldn't be a movie star
They should just be a star
They should be something you can count on
Every night, to be in the same place
To show you where you are
And to remind you that you're home

After you, I had another star
And I could see your Dad dying out
And when he realized he was in the dark of his own making
He walked out
Into that darkness

And maybe one day he'll find the light
And he can come home

Maybe when he remembers
To look back
At us
