Watch a Man Hold a Child

Watch the way
He watches himself

Keeps a tenderness
In his approach

Shows them they can lean on him
That he'll catch them
If they misstep

Watch a man with a child

See how he lets out patience
Like air from a balloon
In spurts or gusts
As much is needed

See how he can carry
Making someone else
A part of himself
A part of his arms
His strength
How it adjusts
To its responsibility

See how he buries his face
Against the softness of another's
And how his skin glows
When it goes toe to toe
With innocence

Watch a man with a child
See how he does

If you see his eyes light up
And his hands go gentle
And his voice go low

You know you're looking
At a man
