The Way I Left It

Your carpet's disgusting
You should really, you know
Investigate that
See if you can get that cleaned
Or pulled up
Or something

And get some ashtrays
Make the place a little more hospitable
Maybe hang a picture on the wall
Or something, jesus christ

You know, I left the place in good shape
Last I remembered
It wasn't a mansion
But it wasn't a dump either
It was...

There were ashtrays
I remember there being ashtrays
And some...I don't know
Atmosphere

You know, I don't have kids
Thank God
Two husbands
But who the hell knows where they are
And this house
This was sort of it for me
And so to come back here
And it's like...

I gave it to you, Chris
Because you were, are, my brother
And you needed a place to stay
And that's fine, you know
That's okay, but--

But the place is a mess
I mean, it is, Chris
It's a mess
And I mean, you've been here
You've been here
This entire time
And I haven't
So...

I'm not sure where we are with this
What we're supposed to do, you know?

I mean, I'm minimizing the damage here
But it's serious, you know?
This is a serious thing

It's...

I remember leaving
But I don't remember
How I left things

But I knew
I'd be coming back
To a mess

And the plan was
Blame you

But...

The plan's a little hard
To hold, you know, Chris?

It's just, uh...

I gotta go to the store
Buy a brush
Buy a broom
Buy some air freshener

Quit smoking, maybe
So I'll save money
On ashtrays

Just...

Just air the place out, you know?

Clear out some old memories

If you're here when I get back
I understand

If you're not, well
I'll understand that too

I know the way I left
But it can't be about that right now, you know?
Not if we wanna...keep going

From now on
It's just gotta be
About the way I came back

That's all I can do right now, okay?

That's all I have
To work with
