Who We Didn't Invite to the Wedding

We didn't invite the recent friends
Which always happens
There should be a table at weddings
Specifically for recent friends

When you get engaged
You immediately meet ten people
Who you connect with instantly
And become immediate friends with
On a deep and personal level
But they're recent friends
And as it is, you barely have room at your wedding
For old friends
And so the new friends aren't invited
To your wedding

We didn't invite both of our entire high school classes
In fact, nobody from either of our high school classes was invited
And it's not because we don't like those people
We just don't talk to them very much anymore

But we realize they were a vital part of our lives, of who we are
And if it were up to us
We would have gotten married in an arena
And had thousands of people
Witness the happiest day of our lives
But...

What's the word--alas?

Alas

We said to each other once--
What a ridiculous thing it is
To admit that this--
This is going to be one of the biggest days of your life
And you can have--tops--a hundred people at it

You know, unless you're a Kennedy
Or a member of the royal family

We didn't invite our dentists
Our mailmen
Our friend's moms
Our dentists' moms
The guy who knows our order at the coffee shop we go to
The security guard in our building who always smiles at us and tells us to have a nice day
The woman who always seems to be jogging a few feet ahead of us in the park every morning

All the people who make up
Our routine lives
Weren't there
On the day when routine was cast out the window
In favor of this milestone
This momentous thing

And then when we returned
To life as we know it
All those people were back
Some of them not even knowing
That they missed anything

Except for the security guard
Who asked us how the wedding was
Right before he handed us
The present he bought
Nicely wrapped and everything

And we looked at him and said--

We wish you could have been there

Which we're sure sounded strange to him
But which we mean
With all our hearts

We do

We really do
