And Then the Lights Go Out

Kat cashes out
Then puts a sweater on
The tits go back in
And the umbrella comes out
She wants to peel the sex off her
Like a wet shirt
But instead she goes out in the rain
And reminds the owner
She has tomorrow off
To spend some time with her kid

Two guys eat pizza
In front of the window
Facing the chain pizza place
The one that's gonna put this pop and uncle shop
Out of business in five months
They talk about shit
And laugh about nothing
And finish their pizza
Wishing they had something else to do
Somewhere else to go

The all-night coffee shop's packed
Because there's a test tomorrow
So the economics majors are cramming
While some late-night poets
Address major philosophical quandaries
Over dark, dark Peruvian brew
Snapping their fingers
When they hear something they like

Keira folds t-shirts
Because she doesn't want to go home
To hear her Mom go on
About her sister's latest boyfriend
And how was work today
And why are you home so late
And are those scratches on your arm?

The moon dips down
Just enough to bump a star
And it goes down, down
Into the middle of the street
Where a guy rides over it
With his bike
But as he does
He makes a wish
And the wish comes true
But the guy never knows it
Because the wish didn't look like itself anymore
Once it became a reality

Letters on signs go dark
Marquees announce new movies
Everything open is now closed

And then the lights go out
And the city is full of book readers
And long walks

Somewhere a girl drives home
To see her kid

And she looks forward
To tucking him in
