Orange Crush at Three Below

Hard holding on
To an orange crush
At three below

Hard to keep hot
When your soda's freezing
In your hand

Hard to make small talk
When your tongue won't move
Because there's ice forming on it
And your lips are chapped and dry

Hard to say when the last time was
You felt this hollow
And full
At the same time

Full of stuff you'd like to say
And unable to find words
To say any of it

Hard to say why your crush
Feels like more than a crush

When that's all it can be
A crush

An orange one, maybe
Indicating a more serious level
Of mild infatuation

Okay
Maybe
Sure

But it's still too cold
To feel warm about anything

To warm up to someone
To get close
To get close enough to invest
To invest deep enough to care
To care enough to stick around

When your hands
Are getting red

Hard to determine
How high your garden wall is
And whether or not
There's anything on the other side

Hard to believe
Some people would call you charming
Or intelligent
Or capable of carrying on a conversation

Look at you now
Who would believe it?

But going on the ice
Holding a hand
Slipping a few times

Laughing at yourself
Offering a jacket
When it really gets cold

Saying what you have to offer now
Is okay, is okay, is just fine

That?

Well

That's easy
