And This Time It Works

We get up in the morning
After last night's fight
And agree to never fight again
And this time
We don't

We eat breakfast
And say we won't say 'divorce' again
Or worry the kids
Or fight in front of them
Or shout that loud again
And this time
We won't

We go to work
And arrive on time
And find productivity waiting for us
And please our bosses
And cut our losses
And stay late to reinstall faith
In our co-workers
That we're good at our jobs
And this time
We are

We come home
And eat dinner like a family
And play board games like a family
And watch tv together like a family
And talk kindly and softly to each other
Like a family that doesn't exist
And we say we'll be that family
That doesn't exist
And this time
It's true

We go to bed
And make love
And it's perfect
It's exactly what we need

The right amount of tender
And tough
And passionate
And precise
And everybody leaves happy
That kind of love-making

And we say
We need to do this
What we just did
Just like this
And do it
More often

And this time
We will

And if we don't

We close our eyes
And imagine a time
When all the things that didn't happen today
Could happen

We imagine starting all over again tomorrow

Going back to the beginning
Back farther and farther

To the last kid
To the first kid
To the first anniversary
To the wedding
To the first date

Doing it all over again
From top to bottom

And this time
It works

As we close our eyes
We try not to let ourselves cry
As we wonder why
It can't

When all we both want it to do
Is work
