Ten Words on the Ocean

We don't say ten words on the ocean
We don't say so
We don't say well
We don't say nice
We don't say warm
We don't say anything at all

We don't say Fall or fun
Or school
Or sun
Or visit or return

We don't say love or like or fond
Or fondness
Or obligation
Or commitment
Or distance
Or disaster

We don't say July or June
We don't say trips, tips, or trials

We don't say regret
Wait, hold, help
Or hurry

We don't say a word

We just sit and watch
And wait for waves
That seem to get smaller
And smaller

We cry for no reason
We feel angry for no reason
We shake our heads
At invisible suggestions

We wait for someone to leave
Since someone is going to leave

But we don't speak

Not to say good-bye
Not to say okay
Not to say a thing

We don't have ten words
On the ocean

We don't have a one

At the moment
Despite how much we can think of to say

We can't say anything
At all
