Love a Man Who's Made Mistakes

You want some advice?

I got some simple advice
I can give it all day
But it won't take that long

One sentence

That's all I need to say
And you'll know
All you need to know

Love a man who's made mistakes

Don't go looking for a saint
A noble creature
Who's never known what it takes
To break something
Then make it work again

Love a man who's lost some friends
Love a man who's cheated at cards
Love a man who's discarded
Things he should have kept

A man who's perfect
Is in so many ways--inept

If he's never had to beg forgiveness
Live with the notion
That his lack of devotion
May at one time
Have caused a fine heart
To depart from his life

Then what good is he?
Really, what good is he?

Love a man who's dropped the ball
Don't fall for someone
Who when you screw up
Will drop his eyes down on you
And shake his head
Go to bed disappointed in you
Rather than staying up
And figuring out
How he's going to get through it with you

Don't love a man
Who cleans up after you
Love a man
Who's in it with you

Love a man who's broken his word
And learned his lesson from doing so
No matter how good a man is
At one point he won't be
So get them after they've been bad
Rather than before
Rather than wondering
What he's got in store
For when it's safe
For him to take advantage
Of his flawless reputation

Love a man who's a man
Not a robot or a righteous fellow
Not a character in a book
Not an angel on a church ceiling
Feeling like he's higher than you
What good would that do?

Love a man who's made mistakes
And the chances you take
Will be worth the breaks that might come
Down the line

Love a man who's made mistakes
That's all you need to hear
