Until He Leaves

You're going to run
You're going to run for miles
Up to the place where the skies
Unwind into ferris wheels
Where you hop on
Hop off
Try to run from him

Run from the boy you loved
When you were thirteen
Before you knew that was possible
Probable
Maybe alarmable
Can't be conceivable
That happy endings end up
Costing you more than you counted on
Once upon a time

And the drugs
And the drinking
And the thinking you wasted time on
Could be a potential burst of relevatory glances
Gestures
Road trips
To cities where people are living
In sin
In silence
In isolation

And when he leaves
You'll forget about him
Wasting time working out
At a gym for the emotionally wrecked
Where you work your issues instead of your arms
And examine the harm that's been done
By the man who said

I'll never leave
I'll never leave in fall
Winter
Spring
Fall
But before you fell for him
You convinced yourself that this was Shakespeare
Destined to end tragically
In a space of minutes
Moments
Magic tricks done by clowns at six-year-olds' birthday parties

You can't get him off
You can't get him off the things he needs
To be the person he needs to be
You can't stop him from lying
Cheating
Crying
Demanding
That you become a punching bag
A personal trainer
A popcorn maker
A therapist
A drunk
A druggie
A flunked out waste of time

Time
Has run out
Until he leaves
At which point
It will start
All over again
