An Old Man Prays

There's a blue fountain
Outside the place where we're eating sushi
And we're going to dance in it
Once we're done with dinner
Because we feel like it

Because we feel like it
Isn't that great?

We're wearing clothes from the 70's
That we found in a thrift store
And we love to watch 'Bullitt'
And gorge on ice cream popsicles
And nachos from the place downtown

Somewhere nearby
An old man prays

We tell each other that in thirty years
We'll be divorced and bitter
Sipping coke from champagne glasses
So as not to relapse
And fall into the laps of younger lovers

We have so much more fun
Knowing one day this will all end

It's the trivial pursuit of passing time
By hang gliding over the east side
Seeing if we can fly without anybody noticing
Going to church to hear the hymns
And falling asleep in the orchestra seats

Somewhere out there
An old man prays

There's more to us than each other
But with each other we're more like ourselves
We're silly obnoxious people
Who find kindness in cereal boxes
And pour milk on it to help it float

We're in love with the intangible
And with chocolate milk shakes

We leave the sushi bar
And dance in the fountain
To harmonica music
We play on our bare fingers
Trying to make each other laugh

And we succeed
Fulfilling the old man's prayers
