The People in the Car

The girl in the back is a cashier
That we stole from the supermarket
Because she was cashiering
On a Friday night
Which is unacceptable

Nobody needs lettuce
On a Friday night

So we convinced her to lock up shop
And come chill with us
Outside the pizza place
Where Tanner works

He gave us free Hawaiian
And we were chapped
By the police
For loitering with intent

So we snuck into Indiehouse
Which was showing 'Go'
For no discernible reason

When Tanner got out of work
We headed downtown
And Krispy drove
Because he's the best parker
Of our weary lot

Next to the cashier
In the back
Is Saint Roberta
Who apparently is rehabilitating

At least that's what she told us
Outside the liquor store

She was standing there
On the outside, looking in
Tempting herself
To see if she could determine
Her own strength

We could see she was failing
So we stole her
From her own temptation

Downtown was disappointing
In may ways and shapes

For one thing
The weather was too nice
When it's nice
There's nobody around

People like to go downtown
To discuss how lousy the weather is
And when the weather is nice
They prefer to stay home

And the weather was nice
So we drove to the beach
Where Tanner
Who is now sitting between Saint Roberta
So named because when we got to the beach
She dropped on her knees in the water
And started to pray
As the sun set in front of her
And because she told us
Her name is Roberta

Where Tanner made a sand castle
Shaped like a duplex
And the cashier girl kissed Krispy
And I took a photo of us all
Writing in our names in the sand
With our big toes

This is our carload officer
And if we were going too fast
My sincerest apologies

I can't imagine why we would be

We don't really have
Anywhere to be
