-- The first of two titles I took from a line in "The Book of Dahlia." --
"Unpack the Truth"
Leave the luggage
Don't bug me about it
We're leaving it where it is
Nothing in there but untold lies
Crying because we can't find
A man to carry our heavy baggage
Are we?
Don't load up a suitcase
Full of old memories
That are colored by the optimistic paintbrush
That is the ever-passing of time
Don't feed me a line
About what the past was
I lived the past
And it didn't last
And I'm glad it didn't
Don't take out your blues
Drape it over the new couch
And slouch down onto it
Wrapping it up in you
You want to unpack something?
Unpack the truth
Unpack the bruises
You got from hitting yourself
Because of how stupid you were being
Every evening when he'd go skiing
On the snow-capped hills
Of Mount All-About-Me
What do you see in that bag
That's making you lag behind
Paying mind to a customer
Who never did pay
Cut up the card
Cut up the photos
Burn the damn dress
Before the mess leaks onto my stuff
Cause enough was enough
Before the tough stuff
Even started
Luckily we departed his savvy canoe
And now the to-do list
Is pretty damn simple
Take out the good
Throw out the bad
And if you don't know what pile
To toss it into
It's probably a lie
So just unpack the truth
