Dating on the Deserted Island

He sits by the log

He sits there
And reads the piece of plywood
That washed up on the beach

Somebody wrote the first line to a novel on it
But neither of us can think of what the line is from

So he goes to the log everyday
And reads the plywood
And tries to think of what book it's from

I think it's his version of a job

We, uh, we went on a date last week

It was...well, it was okay

It was the first time we'd really talked
Since we crashed here

Initially there was just a lot of crying
And healing
And then swimming
And figuring out which plants
Will give you a rash on your tongue
If you try eating them

But lately, things have sort of...fallen into a groove

And so, we decided...

I mean, he's cute and all

Very rugged, but that might just be the fact
That he hasn't showered in six months

And he seems funny

This one time he did this thing
With this piece of the plane we were in

He drew a little--haha--a little frowny face on it
Like, um, like 'ohhh nooo we crassshheeeddd boooo'

Haha--You really have to see it to, um, get why it's so funny

So anyway, one day
We're sitting on the beach
Like we normally do
And he...asks me out

And I think about it
Because, you know
At this point, we're friends
And I really don't want to jeopardize the friendship
So I took a day to think about it
On the other side of the island
And I eventually, I thought--

Oh, what the heck, you know?

So we go out on a date

We went to the middle of the island
Where there's this little, um, pool I guess you would say
And there are a few trees

I mean, the entire island is only about the size
Of your average New York apartment
So there aren't a lot of options
For a date night

Even still, I thought we had a decent time
You know...decent

But the next day on the beach
While he was reading the plywood
I thought about the date
And...

It just didn't do it for me

I mean, he's a nice guy
A really great guy
I'm sure any other girl would just love him
It's just that...that girl isn't me

I thought about not returning his calls
But he would call out my name
While standing a few feet from me
So they were kind of hard to ignore

So we had...the talk

We sat on the beach
And watched the sun go down
And I told him
That it just wasn't going to work out

My mother used to say
That a lot of love is geography
It's convenient

And it would be incredibly convenient
If we could fall in love
But...

I guess it's not so crazy that we didn't click

I mean what are the odds that I'm going to land on an island
With the man of my dreams?

I'm sure it would be a better movie if I did
But it's not a movie, it's life, you know?

Just your typical plane-crash-survivor-living-on-a-deserted-island life

We still watch sunsets together
We still walk around the island at least, um, forty-seven times a day
We still really, really, really like each other

But you know, there are other fish in the sea

It's true, I can usually see them on a good day

And you know, figuratively, they're there too

Until then
I'm glad I have someone to watch the sunrises with

Like they say
If you can't be with the one you love
You gotta love the one you're with
